Understanding VA Benefit Eligibility Requirements

Almost all veterans' benefits start with the Veteran's discharge or separation papers known as DD 214. These documents are needed to prove that you are a veteran and that your discharge was other than dishonorable. If you are a Veteran or the surviving spouse of an eligible Veteran and don't have a copy of your separation papers, get them today. Keep these documents in a safe place and be sure to let someone else know where they are located.

To request a copy of your separation papers you can:

1. Complete VA form SF 180 and mail the form to the VA.

2. Request a copy from the VA online.

3.Check to see if the documents are registered at the County

Recorder's office where you live.
